Translations Don't Work

When it comes to advertising, marketing, even PR copy, as well as some of the content used in education, training, and assessments, translations don't work.

What works?

TRANSCREATION. Trans·crea·tion. [tranz-kree-ey-shuh'n] noun. A creative transfer of concepts, not just words.

See my transcreation samples. Also, read The Native Speaker Syndrome, an article published in the October 2011 edition of CALL SHEET, the newsletter of the Oregon Media Production Association.

The Importance of Origins

The Pew Hispanic Center published a “country of origin” list based on self-described family ancestry OR place of birth. This is valuable stuff, since the distinct demographic and psychographic profiles of each group affects targeting and communications. This work shows that the ten largest Latino population groups in the USA account for almost 92% of all American Latinos. Mexicans still represent nearly two-thirds of the total, with the remaining nine groups comprising one fourth.

Which group is the youngest? Mexicans (median age of 25). Oldest? Cuban (41). The most with foreign-born Latinos? Guatemalans and Peruvians, with almost 70% each. Highest levels of completed college education? (4-yr degree) Colombians and Peruvians, at 30%. Proficiency in English: Topped by Puerto Ricans (80%, partly due to Nuyoricans) and with Guatemalans at the other end of the spectrum, with just under 40%. Highest median household income? Peruvians, with over $51k.

I applied my three American Latino Cultural Clusters to Pew’s numbers – to help with targeting along shared cultural values and linguistic patterns. Results? Caribbean Latinos represent almost 20% of all American Latinos, Mexican and Central Americans, almost 75%, and South Americans roughly 5%. Median age? Mexicans and Central Americans represent the youngest group at 25.3, with Caribbeans and South Americans at around 33.

"SINKO DE MAYO"

Back in 1862, all mayonnaise was made in England. The ship carrying the largest shipment to the new world sank, the cargo forever lost. Thus the National Day of Mourning: Sinko de Mayo.

The real story is that on May 5th (cinco de mayo), 1862, Mexican forces defeated French troops in Puebla, Mexico, after a struggle to end French domination. Today “Cinco” is celebrated more in the USA than in Mexico, as a celebration of all Hispanic cultures.

DISASTERS HAPPEN:

But why do people live there?

Wrong question.

I feel SO fortunate to live in the one neighborhood in the country that every year hosts the LARGEST open studio and gallery show in the United States! More than 500 artists participate in Art-A-Whirl, a three-day weekend in the Arts District in Northeast Minneapolis. Presented by the Northeast Minneapolis Art Association.

Igniting enduring cross-cultural connections through intentional social interaction.. . . Dan Guerrero was FANTASTICO in ¡GAYTINO!His performances, part of the 2011 Political Theatre Festival, a joined effort of Teatro del Pueblo and the Pangea World Theater, were deeply entertaining, moving, funny, and sophisticated. A true class act.
